Going to the Next Level Means You Can’t DIY It
Hello, DoctorZed here, founder of 818: Unlocking Your Life.
I was talking to a friend the other day, who said he was ‘checking out’ some free personal development stuff, and a couple of online programs he’d purchased, looking for how to ‘be happier’ and ‘not worry so much about everything’.
He was hoping to figure everything out on his own.
Let’s face it, most people kind of know what they want and what makes them happy.
So why do SO many struggle with the ‘happiness’ part, and living a life free of worry?
I remember what one of my mentors said a while back:
Life is NOT a DIY project.
Here’s Where You CAN Do DIY (Do-It-Yourself), and Where You Don’t Want To:
-
-
- DIY is great if you’re working on something that’s a hobby.
- DIY is great when you have as much fun in the ‘construction’ phase as you do in the ‘project is done’ phase. (Like when it’s more fun to build that cubbyhouse for the kids than actually have it in the backyard.)
- DIY is great when it’s not life-threatening. (For example, you do NOT DIY the car that you and your family drive.)
-
But your happiness and your wellbeing is too important to DIY—it’s not a hobby project.
The life you are meant to live is too important for DIY—it’s not something you should regret building.
Because DIY means that you make mistakes. It takes longer. The outcome isn’t as good as it would be with help.
DIY your hobbies. Don’t DIY your life.
