Why Motivation Fails

Why Motivation Fails (and What to Do Instead)

By Dr. Scott Zarcinas, Founder, 818: Unlocking Your Life

We often think motivation is about wanting something badly enough.

But the truth is, motivation is fragile, especially when:

  1. You hate the process that leads to your goal, or

  2. You don’t truly value the result you’re chasing.

If you’ve ever struggled to follow through—even on something you say you want—this is likely the reason.

Let’s unpack each one.

Enjoying the Process vs. Hating It

We’ve been taught that discipline means doing things you don’t like. Push through. Hustle harder. Get it done.

But here’s the hard truth:

If you hate the process, you’ll eventually quit.

You might push through for a while—out of obligation, fear, or ego.

But over time, resistance wins. You burn out, check out, or start avoiding it altogether.

But as Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “You’ve gotta love the reps.”

So what’s the shift?

👉 Enjoying the process doesn’t mean it’s always easy—it means it’s aligned.

You can still sweat. Still stretch.

But if there’s a deeper “yes” behind what you’re doing, it becomes energising rather than depleting.

For example:

  • People who hate networking often aren’t shy—they just hate putting themselves forward. But when they find authentic connection? They light up.

  • Someone who hates exercise might discover they love hiking, dancing, or boxing—not the treadmill.

  • A professional stuck in goal-chasing might find joy in collaboration or teamwork instead of competing.

Your process doesn’t need to be perfect. But it must resonate with who you are.

Otherwise, you’re dragging yourself uphill forever.

Valuing the Result vs. Undervaluing It

Here’s something subtle: We say we want something—but do we really value it?

If the result feels:

  • Abstract.

  • Too far away.

  • Not emotionally meaningful.

  • Someone else’s version of “success”.

Then you won’t stay motivated. You’ll sabotage it or let it drift.

For example:

  • “Get healthier” doesn’t drive real change. But “have the energy to play with my kids” does.

  • “Make more money” can feel hollow. But “work fewer hours and be fully present at home” is personal.

We only stay committed to results that feel deeply worth it—on our terms.

So if motivation is low, ask:

“Is this my goal, or someone else’s?”
“Do I actually care about this outcome?”
“What would make this result feel truly valuable to me?”

Because when the outcome matters to you, you find a way.

And when it doesn’t, you find excuses.

The Power of YOU!

Where Motivation Meets Alignment

The sweet spot of lasting motivation comes when:

  • You genuinely care about the result, and

  • You don’t hate how you get there.

That’s when the process becomes meaningful, even if it’s hard. That’s when progress becomes natural, not forced.

I see this all the time with my clients.

They’ve been stuck for years—pushing, grinding, trying to change—but not really enjoying the process or valuing the results in the right way.

Then we reset:

  • We align their effort with who they are, not who they’re trying to impress.

  • We reframe the result so it’s something they actually want.

  • And suddenly, what felt like a grind becomes a pull, not a push.

They stop needing “motivation,” because they’ve built something more powerful: momentum with meaning.

Looking For a Life Coach?

Ready to Move Forward?

If you feel like you’re forcing yourself through something you hate, or chasing results that don’t truly excite you—it’s not a lack of motivation.

It’s a lack of alignment.

The question isn’t, “How do I stay motivated?” It’s,

“How can I love the process and honour the result?”

Because when you get both right, motivation takes care of itself.
